A backing track (also know as jam track or play-along) is an audio recorded (or midi) musical accompaniment witch allows a musician to play along with by practicing licks, scales, exercises or improvisations.
You will find below three different jazz, swing backing tracks in D minor with piano, bass and drum sounds in MP3 format (320 kpbs).
They are divided into three different tempos : 92 BPM (slow swing), 150 BPM (medium swing) & 200 BPM (upswing).

Which scales or modes can i choose to play and improvise over these Dm7 jazz backing tracks ?
There's a lot of possibilities.
For a beginner jazz guitarist the easiest way to improvise over a D minor chord is to play pentatonic scales :
- D minor pentatonic scale (D-F-G-A-C)
- A minor pentatonic scale (A-C-D-E-G). Playing the A minor pentatonic scale over a D minor seventh chord brings an interesting color because of the ninth (E).
- E minor pentatonic scale (E-G-A-B-D). When you play the E minor pentatonic scale over a Dm7 chord, it creates tensions : E is the ninth of Dm7 and B is the sixth.
The three minor modes of the major scale (dorian, phrygian, and aeolian) are also an obvious choice to play over a minor (seventh) chord. The choice of the scale depends on the harmonic setting and the function of the chord you are playing. Example over the Dm7 chord.
Including arpeggios :
- Dm arpeggio (D-F-A)
- Dm7 arpeggio (D-F-A-C)
- Dm9 arpeggio (D-F-A-C-E)
- Dm11 arpeggio (D-F-A-C-E-G)
- Dm13 arpeggio (D-F-A-C-E-G)
- FM7 arpeggio (F-A-C-E). F is the minor third of Dm7, A is the fifth, C is the minor seventh, E is the ninth.
- Em7 arpeggio ( E-G-B-D). E is the ninth of Dm7, G is the eleventh, B the sixth.
- Bm7b5 arpeggio (B-D-F-A) . This arpeggio contains the same notes as the Dm arpeggio, except B which is the sixth of Dm7.
- G7 arpeggio (G-B-D-F) . Playing a dominant seventh arpeggio over a D minor seventh chord is also a good choice. G is the eleventh of Dm7 and B the sixth (also the thirteenth). You can optionally add some extensions to this dominant arpeggio (9th, 11th, 13th).
And even harmonic or melodic minor licks :
- D melodic minor scale (D-E-F-G-A-B-C#)
- D harmonic minor scale (D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C#)
You have to choose the right scale, mode or arpeggio depending on the harmonic context.
