What's the bebop dominant scale ?
Before learning the bebop dominant scale you need to know the mixolydian mode. The mixolydian mode (also called dominant scale) is one of the seven musical modes. It is the mode built on the fifth degree of the major scale. The order of tones and semitones in the mixolydian mode is T-T-S-T-T-S-T (T = tone ; S = semitone). The intervals are 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7. The C mixolydian mode is ( C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb).
What's the difference between the mixolydian mode (Dominant scale) and the bebop dominant scale ?
The bebop dominant scale is commonly used in jazz improvisation. It has a chromatic passing tone (major seventh) between the flat seventh (b7) and the root.
The C bebop dominant scale is (C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb-B) . The chromatic passing tone is B.
Here is the lick. Be sure to play it in twelve keys. You can add notes that you hear, vary fretting-hand effects like hammer-ons, pull-offs, slide, vibratos.
