Bb7 jazz guitar lick | Dorian and mixolydian modes
This jazz guitar lesson is taken from the "10 dominant jazz guitar licks" E-book PDF.
You can play this lick on the first four bars of a Bb7 blues progression.
- Bars 1 & 2 : This lick starts with the minor third (Db) of Bb. This is a common way to approach the major third of Bb (D). The other notes are from the Bb mixolydian mode (Bb-C-D-Eb-F-G-Ab).
- Bar 3 : We find the first five notes of the F dorian mode (F-G-Ab-Bb-C-D-Eb).
- Bar 4 : Chromatic passing tone (E, the b5) between the fourth (Eb) and the fifth (F) of Bb7. Note the presence (for the second time) of the minor third (Db) before playing the major third (D). Ending the lick on the root note of Bb (Bb).
