The following lick is an easy II-V-I jazz guitar line in C major. It helps you to understand how to use the dorian scale (minor mode) and the diminished scale over a classic II-V-I jazz chord progression.
The C major II-V-I progression is : Dm7 | G7(alt) | CM7 | % |
Bar 1 : Five notes from the D dorian scale (D-E-F-G-A) on the Dm7 chord.
Bar 2 : Over the G7alt chord, notes from the E diminished scale (except the D#) which has the same notes as the G diminished scale.
Bar 3 : Resolving with the ninth (D) of CM7.
Bar 4 : Ending on a CM7 chord.
