Dorian jazz guitar lick with tabs | Jazz guitar lesson
In this jazz guitar lesson we will play a minor lick using the D dorian mode over a Dm7 chord. Remember that the dorian mode is a minor type scale composed by a minor third (F in the example) and a minor seventh (C). The D dorian mode used in this lick contains the following notes ( D-E-F-G-A-B-C).
This minor lick starts with the second of D minor (E). Note that the third note of the first bar (D) is approached chromatically by the C# (also called Db). On bar 2 you can hear a major third (F#) as a passing tone between the fourth (G) and the minor third (F). On bar 4 you will find the same passing tone as the bar 2 but down an octave. Ending on a Dm chord (inverted chord).
The fingerings are suggested. This lick must play in twelve keys by exploiting different fingerings. To make this jazz line evolve you can add notes that you hear and vary fretting-hand effects used in guitar playing like hammer-ons, pull-offs, slide, vibratos.
Remember, this lick is just a working base, make it evolve !
