The Lydian Dominant Pentatonic Scale For Guitar - Charts, Theory and Shapes

Construction

It can be constructed in two ways :

One with including a perfect fifth (5), giving the interval formula : Tonic (1), major third (3), augmented fourth (#4), perfect fifth (5), minor seventh (b7).

One without the fifth but with a ninth (9) giving the interval pattern : Tonic (1), second (2), major third (3), augmented fourth (#4), minor seventh (b7).

The charts below show the two interval formulas to build the Lydian dominant pentatonic scale.

Notice that the tonic (1), third (3) and minor seventh (b7) are present in the two versions.

It is important not to confuse it with the Lydian pentatonic scale which is made of : Tonic (1) 2 (major second), 3 (major third), #4 (augmented fourth), 6 (major sixth).

Lydian Pentatonic Guitar Shapes

The following diagrams show the main positions for the Lydian dominant pentatonic scale (the one with the fifth).

You can see three sorts of shapes :

Four "one-octave shapes" (the notes are included within the space of one octave).

Two "two-octave shapes" (the notes cover at least two octaves).

5 Position shapes (the notes are spread out all over the guitar neck).
