In this guitar lesson with free PDF and YouTube short we’ll learn how to turn a dominant 7th chord into a diminished 7th chord.

The Concept

This brief lesson demonstrates that by raising the tonic note of a dominant 7 chords you get a diminished 7 chord.

Here are three examples based on G7, C7 and F7, in order to have the bass notes on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings.

There are one root position chord and three inversions for each dominant 7 chord.

Dim7 chords are symmetrical, they are based on an equal division of the octave into four minor third intervals. 

There are four different diminished chords in one position.

That means that same dim7 chord can have four different names.

Dominant 7 and Diminished 7 Chords

The dominant 7th chord and the diminished 7th chord are both four-note chords commonly used in music, but they serve different purposes and have distinct sounds.

A dominant 7th chord (e.g., G7) consists of a root, major third, perfect fifth, and minor seventh. It has a strong, tense quality and is often used to resolve to a tonic chord in progressions like V7 → I. On the guitar, it’s easy to spot by its fuller, slightly bluesy tone.

A diminished 7th chord (e.g., G°7) is built with a root, minor third, diminished fifth, and diminished seventh. It has a much more dissonant, eerie sound and is commonly used as a tension-builder or transition.
