What Are Harmonized Scales on Guitar?

Harmonizing a scale means building chords from the notes of that scale. By stacking notes in thirds from each degree of a scale, you can create a complete system of chords and arpeggios that belongs to that scale.

For example, harmonizing the major scale produces seven diatonic chords:

I – ii – iii – IV – V – vi – vii°

In C major, these are:

Cmaj7 – Dm7 – Em7 – Fmaj7 – G7 – Am7 – Bm7b5

Understanding this relationship between scales, chords and arpeggios is fundamental to guitar harmony. It helps you identify which chords belong to a key, build chord progressions, understand chord-scale relationships, and find useful material for improvisation.

On guitar, the challenge is not only understanding the theory but also seeing these relationships across the fretboard. This is why the method combines harmonized scale charts with guitar chord diagrams and arpeggio shapes.

To harmonize a scale means to build chords from the notes of the scale. Each scale degree can be used as the root of a chord, creating a complete harmonic system.

What is the difference between a scale and a harmonized scale?

A scale is a sequence of notes. A harmonized scale shows the chords and arpeggios that can be built from those notes. Studying both together helps you understand the relationship between melody, harmony and the guitar fretboard.

Which scales are covered in this PDF?

The method covers major, minor, harmonic minor, melodic minor and harmonic major scales.

Is this harmonized scales method suitable for jazz guitar?

Yes. The concepts are particularly useful for jazz guitar because they help connect scales, seventh chords, arpeggios and chord-scale relationships. The method can also be useful for fusion, rock and other styles.
