10 Pat Martino Jazz Guitar Licks - Solo Transcriptions With Tab and Analysis
This lesson provides 10 short and easy jazz guitar licks transcribed from Pat Martino's solo on the jazz blues tune "Cisco" from the album El Hombre (1967). This tutorial show how Pat Martino's uses important scales and modes found in jazz as the minor pentatonic scale, the Dorian mode, the Mixolydian mode and the harmonic minor scale over dominant and minor chords.

Before tackling the licks let's take a look at the chord structure of Cisco. This is a 12-bar blues in G implying four thirteenth chords (G13, F13, C13 and Bb13), two minor chords (Bbm7, Am7) and one altered dominant chord (E7#9). Here is the chord progression for the solo:

This first line is built with the G minor pentatonic scale (G - Bb - C - D - F) and played over G13 and F13.
This second lick is made of D Dorian (D-E-F-G-A-B-C) with an approach tones (Db) to target D.
G minor pentatonic once again over G13 and F13.
Here you can hear the C Mixolydian mode (C-D-E-F-G-A-Bb) over C13 and Bb13 with a chromatic passing tone (D#) between the ninth (D) and the third (E).
This phrase starts on E7#9 with a short pattern going to a long line using the Bb Dorian mode (Bb-C-Db-Eb-F-G-Ab) over Bm7.
Here again, G minor pentatonic over G13 and F13.
Another easy short line using the G minor pentatonic scale over G13 and F13. Notice the slides to approach the tonic (G) and the fifth (D).
Here is a four bars lick using a repetitive serie of hammer-ons implying three notes (F-G and Bb) over G13 and F13, then C Mixolydian (with passing tones) over C13 and Bb13. It ends with G melodic minor scale (G-A-Bb-C-D-E-F#) over C13 and Bb13.
Four different scales and modes are used in this lick. Bb Dorian over Bbm7, A Locrian (A-Bb-C-D-Eb-F-G) over Am7(b5), Ab Mixolydian (Ab-Bb-C-Db-Eb-F-Gb) over Ab13 and G minor pentatonic over G13 and F13 to finish.
This G minor blues lick implies of a 1/4 bend on Db while playing F, thus providing a major third interval.
