1 - Understanding The Harmonic Minor Scale

The harmonic minor scale is characterized by its unique interval structure, specifically the raised seventh degree compared to the natural minor scale. Thus, giving the following interval formula : 1 (Root), 2 (Major 2nd), ♭3 (Minor 3rd), 4 (Perfect 4th), 5 (Perfect 5th), ♭6 (Minor 6th), and 7 (Major 7th).

For instance, the C harmonic minor scale consists of the following notes: C, D, E♭, F, G, A♭, and B. This one will serve as a basis for this lesson.

2 - Chords From The Harmonic Minor Scale

You can derive chords from the harmonic minor scale using its notes. Here are the seven drop 2 chords of the C harmonic minor scale.

i - CminMaj7 (C minor major 7):

• Intervals: C (Root), E♭ (Minor 3rd), G (Perfect 5th), B (Major 7th)
• Quality: Minor seventh chord built on the first degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

ii° - Dø7 (D half-diminished 7 or D minor 7 flat 5):

• Intervals: D (Root), F (Minor 3rd), A♭ (Diminished 5th), C (Minor 7th)
• Quality: Half-diminished chord built on the second degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

III+ - E♭maj7#5 (E♭ major 7 sharp 5):

• Intervals: E♭ (Root), G (Major 3rd), B (Augmented 5th), D (Major 7th)
• Quality: Major seventh chord with a raised fifth built on the third degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

iv - Fm7 (F minor 7):

• Intervals: F (Root), A♭ (Minor 3rd), C (Perfect 5th), E♭ (Minor 7th)
• Quality: Minor seventh chord built on the fourth degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

V - G7 (G dominant 7):

• Intervals: G (Root), B (Major 3rd), D (Perfect 5th), F (Minor 7th)
• Quality: Dominant seventh chord built on the fifth degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

VI - A♭maj7 (A♭ major 7):

• Intervals: A♭ (Root), C (Major 3rd), E♭ (Perfect 5th), G (Major 7th)
• Quality: Major seventh chord built on the sixth degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

vii° - B°7 (B Diminished 7):

• Intervals: B (Root), D (Minor 3rd), F (Diminished 5th), A♭♭ (Diminished 7th)
• Quality: Diminished seventh chord built on the seventh degree of the C harmonic minor scale.

3 - Modes of the Harmonic Minor Scale

The harmonic minor scale gives rise to various modes, each with its distinct flavor and characteristics. The modes derived from the C harmonic minor scale are:

i - C Harmonic Minor

• Notes: C, D, E♭, F, G, A♭, B, C
• Intervals: 1 (Root), 2 (Major 2nd), ♭3 (Minor 3rd), 4 (Perfect 4th), 5 (Perfect 5th), ♭6 (Minor 6th), 7 (Major 7th), 1 (Root)
• This mode is based on the first degree.

ii - D Locrian ♮6

• Notes: D, E♭, F, G, A♭, B , C, D
• Intervals: 1 (Root), ♭2 (Minor 2nd), ♭3 (Minor 3rd), 4 (Perfect 4th), ♭5 (Diminished 5th), 6 (Major 6th), ♭7 (Minor 7th), 1 (Root)
• Starting on the second degree.

III+ - E♭ Ionian ♯5

• Notes: E♭, F, G, A♭, B, C, D, E♭
• Intervals: 1 (Root), 2 (Major 2nd), 3 (Major 3rd), 4 (Perfect 4th), #5 (Augmented 5th), 6 (Major 6th), 7 (Major 7th), 1 (Root)
• Rooted on the third degree.

iv - F Dorian #11

• Notes: F, G, A♭, B, C, D, E♭, F
• Intervals: 1 (Root), 2 (Major 2nd), ♭3 (Major 3rd), #4 (Augmented 4th), 5 (Perfect 5th), 6 (Major 6th), ♭7 (Minor 7th), 1 (Root)
• Starting on the fourth degree.

V - G Phrygian Dominant

• Notes: G, A♭, B, C, D, E♭, F, G
• Intervals: 1 (Root), ♭2 (Minor 2nd), 3 (Major 3rd), 4 (Perfect 4th), 5 (Perfect 5th), ♭6 (Major 6th), ♭7 (Minor 7th), 1 (Root)
• Based on the fifth degree.

VI - A♭ Lydian ♯2

• Notes: A♭, B, C, D, E♭, F, G, A♭
• Intervals: 1 (Root), ♯2 (Sharp 2nd), 3 (Major 3rd), ♯4 (Augmented 4th), 5 (Perfect 5th), 6 (Major 6th), 7 (Major 7th), 1 (Root)
• Rooted on the sixth degree.
