The Locrian bb7 Mode - Formula Charts and Guitar Diagrams

The Locrian bb7 mode also referred to as Diminished Blues b9 is the seventh mode of the harmonic major scale.

It is derived from the Locrian mode, as its name implies in contains a bb7 instead of a b7.

It is rarely used, however it can be employed over diminished 7 chords. 

 Interval Formula

The interval pattern for the Locrian bb7 mode is tonic (1), minor second (b2), minor third (b3), perfect fourth (4), diminished fifth (b5), minor sixth (b6) and diminished seventh (bb7).

The Locrian bb7 scale should not be confused with the super Locrian bb7 mode (1 - b2 - b3 - b4 - b5 - b6 - bb7) which is the seventh mode of the harmonic minor scale.

Indeed,  the super Locrian mode as a b4 whereas the Locrian bb7 mode has a perfect fourth (4).

One Octave Shapes

Here are four one-octave guitar shape for the Locrian bb7 mode.

Keep in mind that the Locrian bb7 mode has a unique set of intervals (1-b2-b3-4-b5-b6-bb7), so the shapes will reflect those intervals.

The numbers indicate the scale degrees of the Locrian bb7 mode.

The "b" before some numbers indicates a flattened note. For example, "b5" means the note between the 4th and 5th scale degrees is flattened.

Two Octave Shapes

Here are two octave shapes to play the Locrian bb7 mode. As the name implies, the notes are comprised within the space of two octaves.

Try to play these shapes in all twelve keys, anywhere on the guitar neck.
