Learning the name of the notes and be able to find them out on the fretboard is very important when you want to explore scales, chords and arpeggios on guitar.
Knowing them on the guitar neck is obviously useful for a better understanding of music theory and sight reading, it will also help you communicate better with other musicians.
Notes on Guitar For Right-Handed Players
Here are two diagrams for right-handed players showing the notes on the guitar. One with flats and one with sharps.
The natural notes are in black, whereas the blues dots represent the flat notes (b) and the orange dots are the sharp notes (#).
You will notice that the blue and orange notes (altered notes) are at the same point on the guitar neck.
One note can have two different names, these are enharmonic notes, example with D# and Eb or F# and Gb.

Notice that all the notes beyond the twelfth fret are the same as the notes between the open strings and the twelfth fret.
