Hon Kumoï Joshi Scale - Guitar Theory With Diagrams

The hon kumoi joshi scale is a traditional Japanese pentatonic scale often used in classical Japanese music, particularly in koto and shakuhachi performances.

This lesson provides guitar shapes and formulas to play it on guitar.

Interval Pattern

The Hon-kumoi-joshi scale belongs to the Japanese scales.

There are no major or minor third, making it a suspended scale built of tonic (1), minor second (b2), perfect fourth (4), perfect fifth (5) and minor sixth (b6).

The Hon-kumoi-joshi scale falls into the category of 'ambiguous' scales.

This scale is particularly valuable over suspended chords.

Comparison With Han Kumoï

Here's a brief coomparison between the Hon Kumoi Joshi and the Han Kumoï Scale.

They share a resemblance, except for the second note, which is a natural tone in the Han Kumoi and flattened in the Hon Kumoi Joshi.
