Pat Martino Jazz Guitar Solo Transcription | Sunny - Part 2
Pat Martino Jazz Guitar Solo Transcription | Sunny - Part 2
This lesson is about the second part of Pat Martino's guitar solo transcription on Sunny. This is an excerpt from the Umbria live with John with John Scofield (guitar), Joey DeFranscesco (Hammond) and Byron Landham (drums). You can listen to it at 1:23 in the original video .
Let's take a look to the Sunny chord progression and the function of the chords in the first eight bars. Gm7 | C7 | FM7 is a II-V-I progression in the key of F major and Bm7 | E7 | is a II | V sequence resolving to A minor. You can even think Bm7 as Bm7b5.
Here is the original chord progression :
Am7 | Gm7 C7 | FM7 | Bm7(b5) E7 |
Am7 | Gm7 C7 | FM7 | Bm7(b5) E7 |
Am7 | Gm7 C7 | FM7 | Bb7 |
Bm7b5 | E7#9 | Am7 | E7#9 |
Lick analysis
The lick discussed in this lesson is related to the bars 5-6-7 and 8 of the chord progression above, simply Am7 | Gm7 C7 | FM7 | Bm7(b5) E7 |. No major difficulties here if not the execution speed specific to Pat Martino's playing. It can be considered that Martino uses the A minor blues scale over the first four chords (Am7 | Gm7 C7 and FM7). It is good to remember the minor blues scale is a hexatonic scale (six notes). It contains the same notes as the minor pentatonic scale, including a flat fifth (b5) between the fourth and the sixth. This note is often referred to as the "blue note".
