4 Essential Major 7 Chords Every Beginner Jazz Guitarist Should Know

Understanding the Chord Shapes

Each diagram shows a five-string guitar chord voicing. The numbers indicate the chord tones:

R = Root

3 = Major third

5 = Perfect fifth

7 = Major seventh

These four notes form the basic structure of a Major 7 chord. The root note gives the key. The major third gives the chord its bright quality, while the major seventh adds its characteristic jazzy sound.

Notice that all the shapes below are movable, meaning you can play them anywhere on the guitar neck. The position of the root note determines the key of the chord.

Major 7 Voicing #1

The first chord, in the top-left diagram, is a Drop 3 chord, recognizable by the string skip between the sixth and fourth strings.

Major 7 Voicing #2

The chord in the top-right diagram is a Drop 3 chord, characterized by its use of four adjacent strings.

Major 7 Voicing #3

The chord in the bottom-left diagram is another Drop 3 voicing, with the root note on the fourth string.

Major 7 Voicing #4

This voicing is less commonly used, but it illustrates the basic structure of a Major 7 chord, with all four chord tones arranged in their natural order (root, 3rd, 5th, and 7th).

Practice the Four Voicings

Start by learning each shape slowly, making sure every note rings clearly. Pay attention to the position of the root note, as this determines the name of the chord.

Once you're comfortable with the shapes, move them around the fretboard to play different Major 7 chords. For example, moving any maj7 shape to a new root position allows you to play other major seventh chords while keeping the same fingering.

Put Them into Practice

Try playing the four voicings one after another, listening carefully to how each one sounds. Then use them over a simple jazz progression (I, vi, ii V), such as:

Cmaj7 – Am7 – Dm7 – G7

Experiment with different voicings to find smooth transitions between chords. The goal is to minimize unnecessary finger movement and develop a relaxed, fluid sound.

Practice tip: Learn these four shapes in several keys and incorporate them into your favorite jazz standards. With regular practice, they'll become an essential part of your jazz guitar vocabulary.
