The Bartók Scale has the following interval formula:

In the key of C, the notes are:

C – D – E – F# – G – A – Bb – C

At first glance, it looks almost like a major scale. The difference lies in two altered notes:

✔︎ The 4th degree is raised (F becomes F#).

✔︎ The 7th degree is lowered (B becomes Bb).

Those two notes completely transform the character of the scale.

Why Is It Called the Bartók Scale?

The scale is named after the Hungarian composer Béla Bartók, who frequently used this collection of notes in his compositions. Although Bartók didn't invent the scale, his music helped popularize its unique sound in twentieth-century classical music.
