The Javanese Pelog Scale - Music Theory And Guitar Diagrams

The Pelog scale is one of the two scales used in gamelan Indian music (the second being the Sléndro).

In western music it is referred to as Dorian Flat 2, Phrygian Sharp 6 (actually second mode of the melodic minor scale), Phrygian-Mixolydian or also jazz minor inverse.

The formula is 1 (tonic), b2 (minor second), b3 (minor third), 4 (perfect fourth), 5 (perfect fifth), 6 (sixth), b7 (minor seventh).

Here are four guitar diagrams containing four one-octave shapes to play the pelog scale in position.

Try to practice these shapes anywhere on the neck, in all twelve keys.

Two-Octave Shapes

These two diagrams are designed for those who want to play the Pelog scale in position,  within the space of two octaves.

In the first shape, the tonic (1) is on the 6th, 4th and 1st string, whereas it is on the 5th, 3rd and 1st string in the second shape.

Here below, the Pelog scale is presented using 3 notes per string for each shape.

Each shape starting on a different degree of the scale in order to cover all the guitar neck.
